The name Coffin is probably a translation or corruption of Colvinus,
which signifies a basket or a chest.  From having custodianship of the
King's treasure-such employment, like royalty being hereditary.-
Colvinus became associated with the custodians and, through changes
made in succeeding generations, to the form of Coffin.  The name, in
the old records is also spelled as Covin, Cophin, Kophin, Coffyn, and
Coffyne.  The old chateau of Courtiton, in Fallaise, a town in
Normandy, was once the home of the Norman Coffins although the name is
now extinct in that vicinity.  The chateau, up to the close of the
last century, was owned by Mons. LeClere, a grandson of the last Miss
Coffin, who married a LeClere in 1796.
Sir Richard Coffin, knight, the progenitor of this family in England,
came over with William the Conqueror in 1066, as one of his generals.
He received from the King, as his part of the spoils of conquest, the
manor of Alwington in the parish of Abbotsham and this property
descended in a direct line in the family for upwards of seven
centuries.  From the time of Henry I to the Age of Edward II, a space
of two hundred years, the heir of this family was always called
Richard.  A Sir Richard Coffin Held two knights' fees there from
Robert, the King's son, in the reign of Henry II.  There were also
Coffin families at Combe Coffin, now Combe Pine, in the East of Devon;
at Coffin Well, in the South, and at Ingarley, in the West.  Sir Hugh,
Sir Elias, and Sir Geoffrey Coffyn are also mentioned in the records.
