"On account of the inconvenience of obtaining a confirmation of purchases made from the Indians, it was concluded best to obtain a general grant of the entire island, which was the Dongan patent, dated June 27, 1687. This patent is very elaborate and lengthy, and . . it can be found at the Registry of Deeds at Nantucket and in the Genealogy of the Macy family. . . It established John Gardner, James Coffin, William Gayer, Peter Coffin, Nathaniel Barnard, Stephen Hussey and John Macy a body corporate called the Trustees of the Freeholders of the Town of Sherburne."
