The Scottish Queen
Mary was born at Linlithgow Palace in Scotland in 1542, the
daughter of James V of Scotland and the French Mary of Guise.
She became Queen of Scotland aged only six days following the
death of her father, and spent her early childhood with her
mother in Scotland. In 1548 the French King, Henry II, proposed
that the young Mary would be an ideal wife for his son, Francis,
the marriage forming a perfect alliance between the two
countries at a time when England was attempting to exert control
over Scotland. Mary went to live at the French court and at the
age of fifteen married Francis, heir to the French throne.
Francis II reigned for only a few months with Mary as his Queen
and, when he died in 1560, Mary was left without a role. She
decided to return as Queen to Scotland, agreeing to recognise
the Protestant Church as long as she could privately worship as
a Catholic. The Scots regarded this with some suspicion and John
Knox stirred up anti-Catholic feeling against her. It was not,
however, until she married Lord Darnley in July 1565 that things
took a turn for the worse. As time passed it became clear to
Mary that her husband was, in fact, an arrogant bully with a
drinking problem. Now pregnant with Darnley's child she turned
for support to her secretary, David Riccio.
...the Scots had had enough of Mary and, imprisoned at Lochleven
Castle, she was forced to abdicate...
From this point on, events spiralled out of control. In March
1566 Darnley and his accomplices burst in on Mary at
Holyroodhouse and stabbed Riccio to death. A year later Darnley
himself was murdered, his residence in Edinburgh blown apart by
an explosion. Mary had grown close to the ruthless Earl of
Bothwell and rumour soon spread that Bothwell and Mary had been
responsible for the murder, particularly following their hasty
marriage a few weeks later. But by now the Scots had had enough
of Mary and, imprisoned at Lochleven Castle, she was forced to
abdicate the Scottish throne. Her young son was crowned James VI
on 29 July 1567.

HENRY VIII                1509 - 1547
House of Tudor.
Second  son  of  Henry  VII. Henry  was  well educated having a flair for
writing and music, he was able to speak three languages and  was  fond  of
sport  especially  riding  and  tennis.  He had a son (Henry Fitzroy) by
his
mistress, Bessie Blount in 1519, later created Duke of Richmond.  He died
in
1536 after marrying the daughter of the Duke of Norfolk.  Upon  his
accession
he  married Catherine of Aragon, his brother's widow, and was desperate
for a
son. One had been born but died a month later.  Henry earned the
still-held
royal title "Defender of the Faith" from Pope Leo X in 1521 for his
best-selling book 'The Defence of the Seven Sacraments' rebutting the
heresy of
Martin Luther.  However, by 1526 hewished  to  marry Anne Boleyn but
could
not while Catherine lived. Cardinal Wolsey suggested that it might have
been
illegal for him to have married his brother's widow but the Pope would not
accept this. In frustration Henry dismissed Wolsey and Thomas More
replaced
him. Cranmer suggested an appeal to the  universities to  resolve the
issue and
they decided in Henry's favour and Cranmer then pronounced the marriage
invalid. Thomas More disagreed  and  was  executed and  replaced  by
Thomas
Cromwell.   In  1533 Henry married Anne and, by Parliamentary Acts, the
English
Church was severed from Rome and he became its head in place of the Pope.
He
had Anne executed for infidelity in 1536 and married Jane Seymour who
died in
child-birth.  He  then  married,  for political  reasons,  Anne of Cleves
but
did not like her and pensioned her off; he  then  married  Catherine
Howard
who  was  also  unfaithful  and executed.   His  final  wife  was
Catherine
Parr.   Henry  and  Cromwell dissolved the monasteries.  Afterwards Henry
had
him beheaded.
Henry was a forceful king and was disloyal to wives and advisors.
Remarriages, however, partly reflected his aim to produce a male heir to
keep
the throne stable. He died of an ulcerated leg on Friday 28th Jan 1547
and was
buried in St. George's Chapel at Windsor.

Alias: James Charles, The "Wisest Fool"
DESC: Although well educated, James appeared foolish, and was known as the "wisest fool in Christendom".@S1079@pg 66-67
Phobic about assassins, the king wore paded clothes; as if his
Scottish accent weren't enough, he had a speech impediment and
tics, from head-twitching to constant eye-rolling. Still, he'd
romantically come all the way to Norway to rescue his betrothed
when Anne's ship had been pushed off course by a storm. (James
believed that local witches could control prevailing winds and
thus were trying to kill his bride-to-be via shipwreck.)
Some people get their sexual surprises on the weddingnight --
anne, the first Dane to make queen of Scotland and later England
didn't get hers until after a six-month honeymoon. But it was a
doozy. When the fulfilled (or so she thought) twosome arrived
back in Edinburgh in 1590, James shyly confessed: "By the way,
I"m a wee bit bisexual."
Wee wasn't the word. Over the years, this king had more famous
flames than James Brown's band. His tolerant views on sexual
partners notwithstanding, theking loved to persecute. He
commisioned a King James version of the Bible, mistranslating a
key phrase to read: "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live!"
That gave him free rein to carry out a huge number of the most
vicious witch-hunts in Europe.
Meanwhile, Anne did her level best to produce heirs -- not that
easy when he had to coordinate conjugal visits with a long list
of the king's "friends."
In 1603, she and James became rulers of England. Even at the
coronation, the fur statred to fly -- this time over religion,
not sex partners. Anne pooh-poohed the offical Anglican Church
of England, and refused to take Communion. She eventually
became a full-fledged Catholic, much to James' chagrin.
Religious quarrels and sexual politics aside, Anne's greatest
gift to her adoptive country was a patron of the arts. She
brought famed architect Inigo Jones to England and started a
wave of building in the beautiful Jacobean style. This great
Dane supported the arts and was particularly bountiful to
Shakespeare, Ben Jonson, and other writers. At her court, Anne
held masques (highly popular musica and dramatic performances),
taking part in some of them. This frivolity didn't draw much
fire from the king, either. By this time, she and James had
reached a separate but equal detante, their quarters
diplomatically separated by a mere mile or two of drafty pallace
corridors.
