Succeeded his father at an age of 17 months when James IV died in the
battle of
Flodden.  Initially, his mother, Margaret  had custody but after her
remarriage
in 1514, John, the Duke of Albany, was appointed governor of Scotland.  
Later
(in 1524), Archibald Douglas, the Earl of Angus (his step-father) took
over as
Regent.  On reaching the age of 16, James V (who had been held captive by
the
Earl of Angus for 3 years) overthrew his captors. His alliance with
France and
refusal to meet Henry VIII at York provoked an Englishresponse that, in a
military disaster reminiscent of Flodden, James V fought and lost a
battle at
Solway Moss, west of Carlisleon 24th Nov. 1542. Alreadyill, he died
suddenly
(and unexpectedly) three weeks later in Fife.
Succeeded by his daughter, Mary, Queen of Scots.
