Reigned 1100-1135.  Duke of Normandy 1106-1135.  His reign is notable for important legal and administrative reforms, and for the final resolution of the investitiure controversy.  Abroad, he waged several campaigns in order to consolidate and expand his continental possessions.  Was so hated by his brothers that they vowed to disinherit him.  In 1106 he captured Robert and held him til he died.  He proved to be a hard but just ruler.  He aparently died from over eating Lampreys!

In Penman's book William was put into a life boat and the oarsmen were ordered to "save the future king's life". But when William heard his sister calling for him to take her, he had the oarsmen return and was lost in the wake of the sinking - the best ship of the fleet! Because some of the young royals had 'partied' too long in the pub, the ship had a late sailing. A wind came up and the ship hit the rocks. The harbor had a low tide and a bad bar with rocks near the surface; the ship had so much draft the sinking was inevitable.

Reigned 1087-1100.  His harsh rule aroused baronial and acclesiastical oppositon, notably from Anselm, Archbishop of Canterbury.  He made several attempts to recover Normany from his elder brother Robert and was killed by an arrow while hunting.  He may have been assasinated by order of his younger brother who became Henry I.  Had Red Hair.  He had very little time for religion and presided over a liberal court but treated his subjects brutally.  He was reluctant to fill church vacancies and waited for 4 years to apoint Anselm.
