William Westbie married Margaret Watson on 1556.

Margaret Watson  [Parents] was born 1538. She married William Westbie on 1556.

Henry mentions his brother Westbie in his will, by which we must assume that the families had a close relationship. Without seeing the will itself (or a transcription of same), and by considering if Isabel Westbie in his will might be a niece, rather than his sister, I looked at his children's names and at the Westbies born in Howden. More than one of the Watson daughters married a man from Howden, which suggests some sort of dealings with the other village. There is an Isabel Westbie born during the right period (prior to 1597, when Henry died), born in 1571 to William Westbie, who married a Margaret NLN in 1556. Henry has a son William. The clues mount up, and may be leading me in the wrong direction, but there you have it.

Edward Bruce [Parents] 1, 2 was born 3, 4 about 1610 in VA.. He died in Scotland. Edward married 5, 6 Margaret Clark before 1630.

Edward 15 Apr 1646 Isle of Wright Co., VA.. He 15 Apr 1646 Isle of Wright Co., VA.. He was employed Baron of Kinloss.

Edward as the father of Elizabeth is based on location and time of his marriage.  Also, there is record of a deed of gift from Francis Settle to 'George and Jane, children of George Bruce (son of Edward), See Vol. 1677-88, p. 150, Va. St. Library.  It is believed Edward and his family lived in the area of Nansemond Co., Vriginia prior to the locating in the vicinity of Sittingbourne, then located in Farnham Parish of Richmond Co., Virginia. Edward as Elizabeth's father still needs to be verified.

The Bruce family of Orange and Halifax counties should not be confounded with the Bruce family of King George county, some member os which removed to Orange and Culpeper counties. where their names appear very frequently in the county records.  The first Bruces to acquire lands in the Northern Neck were Walter, George and William who came from Nansemond county.

As soon as the Northern Neck began to be settled, there was a large immigration thither of people who had first taken up land in Isle of Wight and Nansemond counties ... There is reason to think that the first three Bruces in the Northern Neck followed the same stream.  This is certainly the case with Walter Bruce.  It was probably the case with George and Wiliam, as all three are found holding land near together in Old Rappahannock county.  The destruction of the colonial records of Nansemond county has greatly diminished the sources of information about its initial settlers, but we know from the patent books in Richmond (Registers Office), that Walter Bruce was a landowner there as early as 1651.

Elizabeth Bruce 1, 2, 3, 4 was born 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 BET 1624 AND 1639 in King George Co., VA.. She died 13, 14, 15, 16 about 1701 in Old Rappahannock Co., VA..

(One source of information for Elizabeth is the 'The Settle-Suttle Family' compiled by William Emmett Reese, Published by Thomasson Printing Company of Carrollton, Georgia 30117.  Library of Congress cat. Card # 74-81298, Page 17-22).  The Bruce Family Forum, Message 1490 on 30 June 2000 suggests that Elizabeth may have been born in York Co., VA.

There is some disagreement as to whether or not Elizabeth's surname was acutally 'Bruce.  In addition the various sources disagree on the year of Elizabeth's birth.  Two ref: at (Rootsweb / Worldconnect: 1. 'Perry's Side and Hitchborns' and 2. 'Teer and Hedrick Family') place the birth of Elizabeth as early as 1624 in Rappahannock Co. Virginia.  Two other ref: ( Rootsweb / Worldconnect:  1. 'My Family Tree ' and 2. 'Walker family') place her birth as late as 1638 in King George County, Virginia.  None of these sites give any indication in regard to whom her parents might be. Rootsweb / Worldconnect: Beth's Family Tree - Beth Bland DB 2327646 suggests that Elizabeth's parents were: George Bruce (b. 1615) and Mary Jane Rice (b. 1617), both born in England.

Jean Rigney (at Genforum - Bruce Family Forum - Msg 2807 on 9 February 2001) makes the suggestion that Elizabeth may be the daughter of a James Bruce.  This James came to Virginia from Scotland as the friend and confidential agent of Governor Spotswood.  He was a relative of Governor Spotswood's wife and a direct descendant of Edward Baron Bruce of Kinloss, who died in 1610 and was a favorite of King James VI of Scotland.  This James is believed to have had children Frances, Charles, George, Elizabeth, Mildred and Lucy.

One site devoted to the Joseph Bragg family suggests that Elizabeth was the daughter of Thomas Bruce and Elizabeth 'Betty' Bragg.  This site suggests that Elizabeth's mother was not born until 16 April 1726 in Richmond Co., VA.   It additionally suggests that Elizabeth and Francis were not married until 4 February 1765 in Richmond Co., VA.

Placing Elizabeth as a daughter of Edward is an assumption and needs additional investigation.  She is placed as a daughter of Edward based on the fact that her husband Francis gave a deed of gift to George and Jane Bruce, children of George Bruce (a brother ?) in 1677. (Recorded in Rappahannock Co. - later Richmond Co., VA.)

Rootsweb / Worldconnect suggests the possability that this George may have been born in Scotland.  This citation additionally suggests that this George (father of Elizabeth b. 1672) may have been the son of Robert Bruce and Dianna Lord.

A possibility exists that this George emigrated to the Northern Neck area from the Nansemond and Isle of Wight area, along with the Carter, Upton, and Lawson families.  There is record of a deed of gift from Francis Settle to 'George and Jane, children of George Bruce (son of Edward), See vol 1677-88, p. 150, Va. St. Library.  In the source, Virginia Magazine of History & Biography Vol. 12, 1904-5, 975.5 B2v: p. 96, 446-453, George is found describing himself as of Sittinghourne Parish, but afterwards when the parish was divided, as of Farnham.

George is believed to have initially appeared in the Northern Neck area of Virginia by 1650.  It is believed that he may have been in the area of the Northern Neck as early as 1660.  His name appears in numerous Northern Neck records by 1668.   In 1671, George was appointed as his attorney Henry Creighton.  George is believed to be the ancestor of the King George Co., Vriginia Bruce Family.  In 1672, George's cattle mark was recorded (Old Rappahannock Records 1671-1676, p. 28, Virgnia State Library).  In 1677, the old Rappahannock (Richmond) Co., records reference a deed of gift from Francis Settle to 'George and Jane, children of George Bruce. (Ref: Vol 1677-88, p. 150, Va. State Library). They were probably the only children born by that time.  About the years later, a second deed of gift, this time from Edward Jeffries, is recorded which mentions the names of George, Hensfield, Elizabeth, Charles, William and John.  (see vol 1680-88, p. 408, Va. State Library)  George was allowed a certain amount of tobacco for carrying an important message to the Governor at Williamsburg (Ditto, 1686-1692, original, p. 352).

In his will of 24 August 1713, George recognized his sons George, Charles, Wililam, Hensfield, and daughters Jane Russel and Son John Bruce.  His daughter Elizabeth is not mentioned.  He left his named children, one shilling apiece.  To his son John, he made the following bequest: "My plantation whereon I how live, with all the land, houses, orchard, fences and other appurtenances whatsoever, thereunto belonging".   George also left to John all "his personal estate, household goods, cattle, horses, mares, hoggs, debt, credits, goods and chattells of what nature or kind swoever".  John was appointed executor of the will (Richmond Co., VA. book No. III, p. 238)
